The Olympian Event Center

Jacob and some of his friends are coming down from Denver. This quartet will feature Eric Gunnison on piano, Greg Garrison on double bass, and Paul Romaine on drum set. The band will roam through jazz and swing tunes, bossa novas and sambas, boogaloos and blues, as well as some selections from Jacob's folk jazz project.

Musicians are welcome to sit in for the 3rd set.

Second Sunday Jazz Affairs feature a buffet of salads, crudités, meats, breads, cheeses, chips, dips and a dessert bar for $15 or the dessert bar with coffee for $10.00 Buffet tickets are separate from the admission charge of $5.00 for members and $7.00 non-members. All members and guests are encouraged to participate in this very lavish and tasty buffet while enjoying the musical entertainment.

On May the 14th, I married the love of my life, my darling Deborah Ann. To those of you who have celebrated our marriage with us -- whether in person or in spirit, nearby or from afar, at the time of our wedding or belatedly -- thank you. Deborah and I truly appreciate your love and support, and we love you madly.

EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

The Necessity for Music

Humans have an innate desire to create and perform art, and music is one of the most important and elemental forms of art that exists. Music unites people, promotes ideas, and fills listeners and performers with deep emotions like joy and wonder. Music makes for vibrant, healthy, satisfying lives.

The Profit of Music Education

Learning the history, theory, and practical issues of music helps us enjoy the art form in a valuable way. Quality training is indispensable to understand the fundamentals of instrument playing, foundations of music theory, basics of music listening, and the essentials of music creation.

Jacob Herold’s Educational Objectives

Basic proficiency in the fundamentals of instrument playing (sound and technique) is valuable to attain personal contentment in music performance – whether performance opportunities are personal, private, or public.

My students will become a skillful player of their instrument by:

· developing their sound/tone and intonation

· refining the physical elements involved while playing their instrument

· learning how to care for their instrument

· playing through etudes and exercises

· practicing scales, arpeggios, and patterns

A primary knowledge of the foundations of music theory (rhythm, melody, harmony, and structure) is essential to meaningfully participate in music making, listen to music, appreciate musical heritage, and understand music composition.

My students will explore rhythm, melody, harmony, and structure by:

· learning to interpret and analyze written music

· considering scales and harmonic/chord theory

· studying diverse music song forms/structures

· experimenting with improvisation

A general overview of the basics of music listening makes the listening experience more enjoyable, and, after all, music is meant to be listened to – not just analyzed.

My students will learn to closely listen to music by:

· listening to recorded music with an analytical ear

· learning melodies by ear and transcribing recorded music

· participating in ear training exercises

· gathering information about music history

Music is a highly creative art form and consistently making space to incorporate the essentials of music creation into music study is a significant endeavor.

My students’ creativity will be encouraged by:

· building a repertoire

· improvising

· writing and arranging music

· performing through jam sessions and/or concerts

Student’s Goals

I believe that students overall sentiments for musical study will be energized when they determine goals and strive to achieve them.

My students and I will determine a small set of goals. I will take my educational objectives and integrate them with the student’s goals to create a vision for our lessons. With a lesson vision in mind, I will determine a method and provide a syllabus for the course of our lessons.

TEACHING STUDIO

Jacob offers lessons and workshops for the following instruments:

Saxophone (alto, tenor, soprano, and baritone)

Clarinet (including bass clarinet)

Flute

Piano/Musical Foundations

A study in rhythm, melody, harmony, and structure, as well as the essentials of listening, music history, and music creation – all the while developing fundamental proficiency on the piano. The lessons will serve to develop an appreciation of the musical arts and to become comfortable on the piano, which is an integral skill for all musicians, whether or not the student wishes to pick up another instrument.

JACOB HEROLD’S STUDIO POLICIES

Scheduling

I will work with you to set up a consistent day and time for lessons, and I will confirm the continuation of that day and time at the beginning of each month.

As a professional musician, performance opportunities occasionally require changes in my schedule. If a performance opportunity arises that will conflict with a scheduled lesson, I may ask to reschedule the lesson – I will do so at least one week prior to the lesson. If the lesson cannot be rescheduled, I offer a full refund.

Make-Up Lessons & Cancellations

Please consider these aspects of lesson attendance:

· I make preparations for each lesson; these preparations are a misuse of my time if a lesson is cancelled at the last minute.

· Missing lessons, even if they are made up later, can have a negative impact on a student’s long-term progress.

If a lesson cannot be kept please inform me at least one day in advance, if possible. If I am not informed one day prior to a lesson or if student is not present at lesson time, there will be no refund or make-up lesson issued. There are two exceptions to this policy:

· If I am informed prior to the day of a lesson that the lesson cannot be kept, I will schedule a make-up lesson at no additional charge.

· If I am informed on the day of a lesson that the lesson cannot be kept due to any serious matter, I will schedule a make-up lesson at no additional charge.

I will make a strong effort to schedule a make-up lesson within the month of the originally scheduled lesson.

Payment

Please pay for a full month’s lessons at the first lesson of that month.

Music from a 2003 "Going Away Concert", right before I went away to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the Berklee College of Music. I enjoyed the many dear friends and loyal supporters of my music who stopped in to listen. Eric, Ken, and Paul were all very kind to make the trip down to Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel in Colorado Springs for the concert. The sound engineer at that church, John Mark Haller, recorded the performance.

I attended a spectacular multimedia performance on Monday at Gates Planetarium (Denver Museum of Nature & Science). The sound designer, Robert Henke, made this tour's only mid-America visit to Denver by invitation of the University of Denver Digital Media Studies program. The visual designer, who's name I did not catch, also did an amazing job interacting with Henke's sounds. The audio and visual projections interplayed to create expansive, tranquil, pillowy sections, as well as dizzying, tense peaks of sound and light.

Henke works as a multimedia composer & performer, as well as an electronic dance music producer (as "Monolake").
